Mathematics
In fifth
grade, the students will be using Saxon Math. Students will be
learning many different concepts in 5th grade. Students will have
nightly homework in math.

We will be using
the program Math Facts Made Easy (Rocket Math) in my classroom. This
program encourages students to set goals while learning their math
facts. We will start the year off reviewing multiplication. The goal
is to get the students through the multiplication facts as quickly as
possible and move on to division. Every Friday the students will be
given a 2 minute timing to assess growth by a weekly basis. Each
student will have their own Rocket Math Folder where they will be able
to keep track of their 1 minute timings (Monday through Thursday) and
their 2 minute timings (every Friday). Once the students have worked
their way through the multiplication and division facts, they will go
back to addition and subtraction to review.

Being able to
solve word problems is a skill that all students need throughout their
school career. We will be implementing a program called Making Word
Problems Easy into our curriculum. Every morning for 10 to 15 minutes
we will be reviewing different ways to solve word problems. Each
concept is taught for 9 to 10 days. At the end of the time period the
students will be taking a quiz over the concept before moving on to a
new solving word problem concept. The goal of this program is to teach
students different strategies for solving math word problems.
