Learning About Literary Genres

As we begin implementing Reader's Workshop in our classroom, the first thing we learned about was literary genres. We discussed the different types of fiction genres (realistic fiction, traditional literature, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, & mystery ), non-fiction genres (informational, biography, & autobiography), and poetry. The posters on the bulletin board are from Mrs. Newingham's Planet 13 website. Click here to be taken to the posters.

During the two day lesson, each group of students was given laminated book covers. The group then needed to decide what genre they would put the book. We had good discussions about why we put the book in a certain genre. Now the students need to document what genre they are reading in their Reading Logs and their Reader's Workshop Folder. After the direct lesson and group work, the students were able to use their ActiExpressions to answer questions about genres on the Promethean Board.
