Classroom Economy

I implemented the classroom economy into my classroom last school year (2008-2009). I researched different Internet sites, came up with my plan, and utterly failed in implementing it in my classroom successfully. So this summer I was back to the drawing board.

I absolutely loved the idea of the classroom economy, but I couldn't seem to find the time to implement it correctly in my classroom. My day is packed with making sure I teach the academic standards, keeping track of data, planning lesson plans, grading papers, attending meetings, and on and on. I am sure that no other teacher has this problem (Yeah, right!).

Last school year, I used checks, deposit slips, withdraw slips, pay checks, classroom fines, classroom bonuses, monthly bills, and job applications. The students were excited about it, and we did a great job keeping it up for about the first semester of school. Then, the second semester came around, and we were busier than ever. It just all got put on the back burner for more important academic progress.

This coming up school year, I am going to be using an adapted version of a classroom economy. My students are still going to have jobs, and they are still going to apply for the jobs. They are also going to continue to be paid for jobs each month, still earn bonuses, pay fines, and pay a monthly bill, but we are not going to do this with checks or pay checks. I am just going to pay the students in Frog Bucks to keep it simple. I also have reduced the amount that I am paying the students.

I also did a classroom store once a nine weeks, but to be honest the cost to keep this going has made me change how I am going to do this also. Instead of a classroom store, I am going to offer the students a chance to purchase different items every two to four weeks with an auction at the end of the school year. Some of the things I am going to offer my students are Sit with a Friend, Have Lunch with the Teacher & Friend, Free Homework Passes, pencils, erasers, treat jar, treasure chest, and more. Students will not be required to spend their money. They may keep their money for the auction at the end of the school year.

Below you will find the forms and other materials I use in my classroom for my classroom economy. I am also including links to other wonderful teacher websites that use classroom economy in their classrooms. Many of these teachers do a great job of completely implementing the system into their classroom. On a final note; After implementing this program for a year, I have found that you need to find the way it will work in your classroom with you and your students. Don't be afraid to make changes to it!
